How do I play Lights Out?

Guess the hidden F1 word in six tries. After each guess every letter is colour-coded: green means the right letter in the right spot, amber means the letter is in the word but in a different spot, and grey means the letter isn't in the word at all. Use the clues to narrow it down.

What words can I guess?

Any word of the right length — type it and press Enter to drop to the next row. The hidden answer is always a real F1 term (a driver, team, circuit or piece of racing jargon), so F1 knowledge helps you home in, but you're free to make exploratory guesses.

How often does the word change?

A fresh word is set every day at midnight UK time. The puzzle is deterministic from the date, so every visitor gets the same word on a given day. The word length (between five and eight letters) is shown before you start.

Do I need an account to play?

No. Lights Out is free to play with no login required. Your progress is saved locally on your device so a refresh won't wipe your run. A free Pitbrain account adds score history and today's leaderboard.

Can I share my result?

Yes — once you finish, the result card has a Share button that copies a spoiler-free grid of green, amber and grey squares (the word itself is never revealed), using the native share sheet on mobile or your clipboard on desktop.

Tips for a better score

Open with a word rich in vowels and common consonants to eliminate the most letters at once.
The answer is always F1 vocabulary — drivers, circuits, teams or terminology — so ordinary English words waste a turn.
Track which letters you have ruled out; most failed runs come from re-using a dead letter.
