How do I play Chequered?

Tap a white cell to select it. Type letters via the on-screen keyboard — each letter fills the cell and advances the cursor in the active direction. Re-tap the same cell to flip between Across and Down. Tap a clue in the side panel to jump straight to its starting cell.

Does Reveal count as solving the puzzle?

No. Reveal fills only the cells that are empty or wrong, leaving any cells you got right untouched. Revealed cells render in a softer italic style and the win banner becomes 'Solution revealed' instead of 'Solved'. Re-typing into a revealed cell reclaims it — if you finish without any revealed cells, you get a clean Solved.

How often does the crossword change?

A new puzzle is picked every day at midnight UK time. The picker hashes the date and indexes into the puzzle pool, so every visitor sees the same crossword on a given day. The pool grows over time — the foundation ships with a starter mini and we drip more in.

Do I need an account?

No. Chequered is free to play, no login required. Your in-progress letters and timer are saved locally on the device so reloading or coming back later resumes your run.

What keys / gestures work?

Letters: type with the OS keyboard or any hardware keyboard. Backspace deletes the current cell or steps back one. Arrow keys jump cell-by-cell and switch direction. Tab cycles through entries. On mobile, tap a cell to pop the keyboard, and tap the same cell again to flip Across/Down.

Tips for a better score

Fill the short down-clues first; three-letter answers are usually circuit codes or team abbreviations.
Clues referencing a season year almost always want a champion or a race winner.
If a clue reads oddly, it is probably jargon rather than a name.
